It’s been an exciting year so far for the Leon Heart Fund. As of November, we have installed 24 life-saving defibrillators in local schools, pubs and clubs and, most recently, boxing clubs. With over £160,000 raised so far and a wealth of fun-filled events still to look forward to, perhaps you’d like to know a little more about some of our invaluable supporters and what the Leon Heart Fund has been doing to help in the local community.
The people at DJ Boxing Gym in Clydach have certainly been making a knockout effort to support us this year, and in return, the charity has now become official sponsors of the club.
David John of the club says, “Julie of the Leon Heart Fund has been a breath of fresh air to DJ Boxing Gym. I first met her through her son Ross, when she came in to ask my colleague Paul Kennedy if she could place a charity pot in the gym. Of course we were happy to help, and within three months, the community had completely filled it up with donations.” He adds, “Local charities are so important, and this one in particular really moved me.”
DJ Boxing Gym have continued to be solid supporters of the charity and are now proud to wear their brand-new kit with the charity logo on the back, as well as displaying the logo in the corners of the boxing rings to boost the charity’s exposure.
The gym trains around 60 people per day, including an impressive feat of 5-6 unbeaten pro boxers. For them, in such a dedicated physical environment, heart safety is paramount. This is why, in August, the charity were happy to provide a defibrillator to make DJ Boxing a heart-safe gym.
“It was amazing and so generous,” says David. “It’s great for both the gym and the local community.”
For DJ Boxing, inspiring confidence through sport (particularly in children) is what makes it such a key part of the community, driven by the sheer passion of those who work there. Just as the Leon Heart Fund is propelled from strength to strength each year by the dedication and hard work of all those involved, it seems only natural that this has been the perfect pairing to keep both DJ Boxing Gym and the Leon Heart Fund continuing to provide all-important support to the local community.
